Customs' Pilot Program Addresses Import Safety

October 31, 2008

Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) are launching a new importer pilot program to assure the safety of imported products.

Companies that already participate in Customs' Importer Self-Assessment (ISA) program will be able to apply the same principles to meet CPSC's new import safety regulations.

Under the ISA-Product Safety pilot program, companies will establish internal procedures and controls to comply with CPSC regulations. In return, they will have direct access to CPSC for consultation, fewer safety inspections, and head-of-line privileges for products that are taken for laboratory testing.
