LA-LB Clean Trucks Program Starts October 1, Delay on Fee Collection

September 26, 2008

The Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach say the implementation of the Clean Trucks Program will begin as scheduled on October 1, however collection of the $35 per-TEU fee will be delayed several weeks to give programmers more time to work on the computerized PortCheck system, reports the Journal of Commerce.

Port officials say the Clean Trucks Program will cut truck-related air pollution in the Los Angles harbor 80 percent by 2012, and will start with a ban on all pre-1989 trucks in the port complex starting October 1.

In addition, the program includes truck concession requirements to identify “clean” trucks, ensure reliable short-haul service, and improve air quality, security, and safety, according to the Port of Long Beach.

As an interim measure until the computer program is developed, the ports intend to issue window stickers for all trucks that have been cleared to operate in the harbor.
