According to a new study, the PierPASS program at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, which is designed to encourage container pick-ups during off-peak hours, hit a new milestone with 9 million truck trips having been diverted since the program was implemented in July 2005.
In addition to easing congestion at marine terminals, PierPASS is also helping alleviate truck traffic on local roads during peak driving hours. For example, the freeway closest to the port complex experienced a twenty-two percent increase in off-peak truck traffic since the program’s implementation, reports officials.
The off-peak operating hours are Monday through Thursday, 6 p.m. until 3 a.m., and Saturdays from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m.
